Board Member Spotlight: John Souter

Lilburn CID board member John Souter’s entrepreneurial spirit began at the early age of 23 when he founded Comet National Shipping in 1992. Necessity was indeed the mother of invention because during this time of recession John was unable to find work after finishing school — so he created a job for himself!

Comet National Shipping is a third-party logistics company that provides transportation, packing and warehousing solutions to suit any company’s needs. Formed out of John’s childhood bedroom in Snellville, the company soon grew to be the enterprise it is today in Lilburn.

As a business and multi-commercial property owner in Lilburn, John always has Lilburn’s best interests in mind.

When Atlanta Vineyard Church pastor Johnny Crist bought a house across from Lilburn City Hall in 1986, he had no interest or intention of entering politics. However, being an active member of the community and having given many speeches at neighborhood and City Council meetings, he was strongly encouraged to run for Lilburn City Council in 2008.

After studying leadership for more than 15 years, the mayor learned why businesses survive, how leaders lead and how they grow. He wanted to help steer the City of Lilburn with a laser focus and clear vision, while being smart with spending its money.

As much as Mayor Crist loves Lilburn, he has resigned his seat effective March 1, 2020 to pursue a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives.

Gwinnett State of the County

LCID was pleased to attend and co-sponsor the Gwinnett State of the County Address at the Infinite Energy Forum on Wednesday, February 12. Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Chairman Charlotte Nash reviewed the 2019 County highlights and presented the vision for 2020. The event was hosted by the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and Council for Quality Growth and was attended by distinguished County and State officials along with Georgia economic development specialists.

Message from Executive Director, Tad Leithead

The Lilburn CID experienced a very good year in 2019. We moved forward with several initiatives, including a new landscaping contract, where improvements along Lawrenceville Highway have already begun. We also enjoy an excellent working partnership with the Lilburn Mayor and Lilburn City Council, which allows us to work together on the Jackson Creek trail and other key projects.

At our January 2020 Board Meeting, the CID approved a budget for 2020 which includes continued enhancements to landscaping, plus two key safety and mobility projects: the intersection of Lankford Road at Lawrenceville Highway and improvements to Hood Road at Bryson Park including a new traffic light and intersection. The LCID looks forward to an exciting year in 2020. We appreciate our members and appreciate your feedback.

LCID to Co-Sponsor Gwinnett Candidate Forum April 22

LCID is partnering with Gateway85 CID to host a forum on April 22 for Gwinnett commissioner, County and State candidates running for offices in the 2020 election. The event will take place at The Global Mall with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the forum beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event will also feature a mini Taste of Jimmy Carter Boulevard, highlighting several of the unique cuisine options available in the area.

BrightView Continues to Make LCID Look Good

BrightView has had a busy winter shoveling debris, clearing curbs and eliminating graffiti. The year has gotten off to a great start with BrightView keeping the district in tip top shape.

BrightView gardener Mike Terrell diligently shoveled curbs and curb drains, clearing debris at Lawrenceville Highway and Greenwood Drive NW across from the Hardees.

Graffiti was reported at Lawrenceville Highway and Jimmy Carter Boulevard and was promptly removed. Vigilance against vandalism discourages the practice.

Full maintenance of the 1.2 miles along Jimmy Carter Boulevard wasn’t previously part of LCID’s contract, but overgrowth and debris build up along the curbs near Pep Boys across from Mr. Clean Carwash needed a great deal of care and work. BrightView did an outstanding job clearing this unsightly mess.

The BrightView team completed plantings and hardwood mulch application to Rockbridge Road and Lawrenceville Highway in early February. The newly trimmed “curbline” is ready for spring.

Landscaping and mulch was also completed along the Lawrenceville Highway medians in front of Wells Fargo near Beaver Ruin.

LCID is excited for BrightView’s next big project — the clearing and landscaping of Jackson Creek Trail— due to begin early spring. If you’re out and about the district and you spot a hardworking member of the crew, be sure to give them a heartfelt ‘Thank you!’
